Yoga, design, and beadwork have been a huge part of my life for the last 23 years. I had been in a car accident and sustained a back injury. My Yoga journey began with a wonderful yoga therapist to heal my broken vertebrae. I had lots of time to make jewelry in those months of healing and began creating my own style of beadwork, which I continue to make to this day.
As I’ve continued on my yoga journey, sadly, my back pain has increased. I was not expecting this, seeing as the intention of the yoga practice is to find more balance, healing, and ease. I have been going through a challenging transition with my practice.
I had L5-S1 discectomy to clear out my ruptured disc. In my search for healing, I found this quote from an Iyengar yoga teacher who was in a lot of pain after teaching for over 20 years:
“Yoga is an ancient healing art so I began to intuit that there was something missing. The missing link is balanced posture, researched by Noelle Perez of the Institute D'Aplomb in Paris, France. Since yoga is thousands of years old, yoga assumes people begin in Balance. However, due to cultural norms most people in highly industrialized nations are out of Balance.” This fascinated me so much that I have begun my study of ‘Spinefulness’ at The Balance Center in Palo Alto http://www.balancecenter.com/. My yoga practice has shifted from simply doing the poses in proper external alignment, to doing the poses with an internally balanced structure. This is what ‘Spinefulness’ is all about. After exhaustively searching for healing, 'Spinefulness', also known as living in Balance, feels like healing at it's core. Other healing modalities have been able to give me temporary reprieve from pain, but this process puts healing back into our own hands. It uncovers the underlying habitual movements that contribute to spinal dysfunction, and gives me the tools to change, on a moment-to-moment basis. I am incredibly grateful for this information.
